Your Phone’s Next Camera Won’t Have a Lens
Metasurface optics — flat arrays of nanoscale pillars — are leaving the lab, and the camera bump may be leaving with them.
A conventional lens bends light with curved glass; a metasurface does it with geometry, steering wavefronts through millions of precisely shaped pillars etched into a wafer. The optic that results is flat, thin, and manufactured like a chip — because it is one.
Early production units trade image quality for thinness, leaning on computational correction to claw back what the physics gives up. The correction is improving faster than the optics, which is precisely how the smartphone camera won the last war.
Glass had a four-hundred-year head start. Silicon is a fast learner.
The first shipping products will be modest: under-display sensors, depth cameras, medical endoscopes. The ambition is not modest. It is the end of the trade-off between how well a device sees and how thin it can be.
What comes next
The technology is no longer the bottleneck. The harder questions — who builds it, who profits, and who bears the risk — are only beginning to be asked.
