Promoted with the league’s second-smallest budget, they were everyone’s pick for relegation. On Sunday they finished third.
The template will be studied for years: a back line assembled from free transfers, a pressing scheme borrowed from futsal, and a data department of exactly two people who scouted by watching, of all things, the matches.
The manager’s contribution was subtraction. Fewer set plays, fewer instructions, fewer players who wanted to be elsewhere. What remained was a team whose whole was reliably, maddeningly larger than its parts.
We couldn’t buy points, so we had to earn them. It turns out that still works.
The summer will test it all. The striker has a release clause, the analyst has offers, and the league’s aristocrats have long memories and longer chequebooks. The club insists it is ready to be raided — and to rebuild the same way.
What comes next
The season moves on, as seasons do, with a ledger of what was won and what was merely survived. Next fixture, improbably, is already on the calendar.
