Astronomers Map a River of Stars Flowing Through the Milky Way’s Halo
The stream — 27,000 light-years long — is the fossil of a dwarf galaxy our own devoured billions of years ago.
Using six years of positional data on more than a billion stars, the team identified a coherent ribbon of stars moving together against the galactic background — the unmistakable signature of a smaller galaxy pulled apart by the Milky Way’s tides.
Chemical fingerprinting sealed the case: the stream’s stars share an abundance pattern distinct from their neighbours, a family resemblance that survived the dismemberment of their home.
Galaxies do not die quietly. They leave rivers.
Beyond its archaeology, the stream is useful. Its shape traces the galaxy’s gravitational field like dye in moving water, offering one of the sharpest tests yet of how dark matter is distributed in our own halo.
What comes next
The findings await replication, and the team is careful not to overclaim. But even the skeptics concede the data points somewhere new.
